Wall to wall carpeting has fallen by the wayside as the flooring covering of choice for most home remodelers, supplanted by organic materials such as stone, tile, and hardwood flooring.
But wall-to-wall carpeting certainly has its strong points, including the fact that it can be relatively easily switched out for new materials when the old materials wear out.
Compare that to the difficulty or near impossibility of switching out hardwood flooring or even something like . Carpeting goes down fast, installation is fairly inexpensive, and there is no better way to reduce noise within a room than two at carpeting. Not only that, but carpeting makes the floor much easier to walk on.
Wall to Wall Carpeting: Four Material Types
Even though there are a myriad of types of carpeting material out there, you will tend to encounter these four most often:
Wool Carpeting
Wool is definitely the most premium type of carpeting you can buy, and it has a very nice warm feeling that the man-made materials can never match. On the downside, wool carpeting is less stain resistant than the synthetic materials.
Acrylic Carpeting
If you want to approach the softness of wool, without the cost and maintenance considerations of wool, you may want to think about acrylic-based carpeting. Yes, we admit that the very word "acrylic" does not seem to apply to a soft material such as carpeting, but it does prove to be remarkably resilient to moisture and it does have a nice feel.
Polyester Carpeting
Polyester: the much-maligned polyester has several good points. Like other man-mades, polyester is very stain and moisture resistant. Carpeting that receives a lot of sunlight will prove to be resistant to fading if made of polyester.
